Geography of Morocco :
Location :
Morocco is situated at the extreme North-West of the African continent, between the 36th and the 21st north parallel, Morocco has a total area of 710850 km2.
Borders :
Morocco has 2934 km shore on the Atlantic Ocean and 512 on the Mediterranean Sea. The Kingdom has borders with Algeria on the East and Mauritania in the South.
Climate :
Moroccan climate is characterized by two main climatic zones: the North area which is relatively wet and the deserted south area at the edge of Sahara.
From October to April the country enjoys a Mediterranean climate and a dry season from May to the end of September.
Important local variations can be observed, due to the Sahara's proximity and the Atlantic Ocean influence. Near the ocean the humidity is high, and the further the Atlantic is the higher the temperature amplitude is. Snow cover can be important in the mountains where temperature can reach -20° C.
Climatic variations from one year to another are affecting agriculture since high differences can be observed.
Relief :
- Middle Atlas, with a peak at 3354 m (Bou Naceur)
- High Atlas, 750 kilometers long from the Atlantic to Moulouya sources, is where culminates the highest point of North Africa:
- Djebel Toukbal.
- The Anti Atlas, in the south, is Lower Mountain.
- On the East, A 1300 meters high plateau separates Morocco from Algeria.
- Sahara's desert begins in the south of the country.
- In the North, Rif Mountains are separated from Atlas by aza canyon.
